Whether you are a beginner sewer or need a refresher course on sewing machine needles, this quick guide will help you choose the right needle for your project. Ballpoint needles are preferred when working with knitted fabric types. As needles get progressive sharper, they are constructed to work well with tougher materials such as denim and leather.

Needle sizes vary and are designed for working with thinner to thicker threads. Very lightweight needles need a thinner thread to use with materials such as silk and sheers. A medium weight 90/14 needle size serves as a good general size, a little stronger for cotton and quilting fabric types. Heavyweight options from 100 and up are designed to be used with materials such as canvas, denim, upholstery, and multi-layer projects.
