What is your Etsy shop name?
Heaven Spun Creations

Where are you located?
Vancouver, BC, Canada

Summary of what your shop offers:
My shop offers crocheted scarves made from my own handspun yarn. I also offer hand-felted scarves. It is all about the scarf!!

How long have you been practicing your craft?
My grandmother taught me to crochet when I was a little girl. A year ago I couldn’t find the yarn colors that wanted, so I taught myself to spin my own yarn. That was a fun adventure and I was immediately hooked on spinning. Within a few months of that I ventured out into felting. I love anything fiber related.

Have you had any formal training in it?
I am mostly self-taught.

Where did you learn your skills?
Local workshops and online video classes.

What made you decide to start an Etsy shop?
I couldn’t stop myself from spinning new yarn and creating new scarves. I had so many that I began to sell my items at local craft fairs. When I saw the success I had in the local arena, I had to try and branch out. So…. Etsy came into my sights.

What makes your Etsy shop stand out from all the others out there?
Etsy has a lot of scarves for sale. My shop is unique in that I offer HANDSPUN scarves. This gives my product a real edge in the quality of my items. Handspun yarn is a real luxury. I only use the highest quality of merino wool. This makes my product natural, environmentally friendly, and sustainable. Wool is really a wonderful fiber. My scarves are not at all scratchy like many factory wool items. This is due to the quality of the merino wool that I use. It is truly a soft delight.

What do you find to be the most fun and rewarding about having your own shop?
I really just love to create new creations. It is wonderful to provide a product that is such a delight to create. It is a real blessing to love what you do.

What does customer service mean to you?
Customers are very important. If your customers are not happy, there is really no point in providing a service or merchandise. It is all about the customer being happy.

Where do you find your motivation and inspiration when sales are slow?
I am still very new to this whole process, and eagerly awaiting my first online sale. I think it is my drive to that first sale that has me going right now.

What helps to inspire you when creating?
I get a lot of inspiration from nature, and natural beauty. I am in love with color. I get very excited to see how all the colors spin up into yarn on my wheel as I am working. Much of the time it is a very organic process.

Where do you see your Etsy shop in a year? Or where would you like to see it?
I would like to add some more felted items into my shop in the near future. I have been working on some fabulous felt jewelry. I hope to see my shop going steady and strong in the next year.

What words of wisdom do you have for readers who are considering opening a shop on Etsy to sell their own handmade creations?
Get ready for a lot of fulfilling work and a great adventure. Don’t give up to quickly.

Which item in your shop is your favorite?
I would have to say any of the rope scarves in my shop are my personal favorites. They are also a local favorite in my area.

It is so wonderful to have you stop by and share your experiences with Joanne. It has been my pleasure getting introduced to her as well. It is always great to see new Etsy sellers grow in their shop and I definitely look forward to seeing Joanne’s blossom. Hopefully this little corner of cyberspace will help to get the word out there and they can see all her hard work and wonderful creations.

  2. Lovely to read Joanne’s interview and get to know her a bit better. We get the privilege of chatting with her, over at the Etsy CAST team. I love her creations.

    • Nelly,

Thanks for stopping by and sharing some of your experiences you have had with Joanne. I have to agree that having the interviews done with new shops provide some great insights of the creator behind the scene.
