Where are you located?
Rotterdam, the Netherlands

Summary of what your shop offers:
I like to call it “Parametric and Laser Cut Fabulousness”. Parametric refers to the way my designs are generated by self written computer programs. These programs can create the most intricate patterns, that I then use for creating products. All my products are laser cut, and carefully finished by hand

How long have you been practicing your craft?
I have just opened my Asymmetree Store a month ago. Before that, I have made paper and feather lampshades, for three years, with my other store; GinkgoStudio/GreenwallNL. After three years, it was time for something new, and I will be discontinuing my lampshades next month.

Have you had any formal training in it? Where did you learn your skills?
Next to my Etsy store, I work full time as an architect. Thank to this, I am quite skilled with a lot of different computer programs. Apart from making technical drawings, we do a lot of studies in 3D programs and also use parametric design for this. By doing this, we can create an infinite amount of variations of our design. This type of design is the same as what I use for my products with Asymmetree.

What made you decide to start an Etsy shop?
When I made my first lampshade, for my own dining table, I got so many responses of people asking where I bought it! I was already a buyer at Etsy for years, so opening a store was a logical step for me!

What makes your Etsy shop stand out from all the others out there?
With my capability to create crazy patterns, generated by the computer and inspired by nature, I am able to make unique products that would be really difficult to make by hand. I also purchased my own laser cutter, allowing me to make endless tests and prototypes, without having to wait several days for someone to cut it for me. This makes designing more fun and fast!

What do you find to be the most fun and rewarding about having your own shop?
Of course that is getting great feedback! I am always excited to hear that people love their items. One of the first feedback in my new store was “Wow. These are even more beautiful in person. Thanks so much.” That makes me happy 🙂

What does customer service mean to you?
My second sale involved a request to make 1 big drink coaster, out of my 4 drink coasters. I am very flexible with adjusting my designs upon request. And of course I keep people posted when I ship their item and inform everyone of approximate shipping dates in advance.

Where do you find your motivation and inspiration when sales are slow?
Nature, architecture, science and in other unexpected places.

What helps to inspire you when creating?
See answer above

Where do you see your Etsy shop in a year? Or where would you like to see it?
I hope my sales will be a lot higher! And that I still enjoy making beautiful products. That last one is actually most important.

What words of wisdom do you have for readers who are considering opening a shop on Etsy to sell their own handmade creations?
If you want it, you can do it! But keep in mind that it will cost a lot of time. First in making designs, making the product itself but also promoting, social networking and even bookkeeping! You must be up for that!

Which item in your shop is your favorite?
That will be my Giraffe clock! I am really happy how that turned out with the multiple layers of wood

Do you have a current promotion you would like to share?
Yes, I am selling all my Zodiac Necklaces for quite a big reduction, $29 instead of $39! And free shipping!
